The choice to end a pregnancy is not made thoughtlessly or easily. Women choose to terminate a pregnancy for varied and deeply personal reasons. Many women find it helpful to discuss the decision with their partner, a family member, a close friend, their doctor, a clergyman, or a counselor. This personal issue calls for empathy and understanding in a non-judgmental atmosphere.

At Bristol Women’s Health, our Virginia licensed OB/GYNs offer abortion care to women up to 16 weeks of pregnancy.

The Abortion Pill is a combination of two medications that will b taken in our center and in the privacy of your own home. Some women report the medication abortion as being “private” and “more like a miscarriage”.

  • You will take the first pill in our center. It will block progesterone, a hormone needed to continue the pregnancy.
  • 24-48 hours after taking the first pill in our center, you will take the second set of pills at home.
  • They gently soften and open the cervix so that the discontinued pregnancy can pass through.
  • Most women will completely expel the uterine contents within 6 hours after taking the set of pills at home.
  • You will experience vaginal bleeding similar to a heavy menstrual period and intense cramps.
  • Most women may continue to bleed lightly up to their next period.

After you complete your medical history forms, lab work, and counseling, you will be escorted into the procedure room. A mild sedation may be given to eliminate anxiety.

The abortion method used is vacuum aspiration. It’s hard to say what the abortion will feel like since it’s different for each person. Some women compare it to menstrual cramps. After the procedure, you will be closely monitored in a comfortable recovery room under the supervision of the nursing staff.

Th type of abortion that will be performed after the 1st trimester of pregnancy is similar to the first trimester surgical procedures, but because the pregnancy is more advanced, the procedure takes a little more time and longer recovery is sometimes required.

Recovery

Following the abortion, you will be resting in a closely monitored and comfortable recovery room under the supervision of the nursing staff.

Before being discharged, you will be given post-operative instructions. Patients are encouraged to rest a while before leaving our center. There’s no rush.

Afterwards

  • You can resume normal activities the day after your abortion, but be careful with strenuous exercise.
  • All prescribed medicines must be taken as directed.
  • Any unusual symptoms such as excessive bleeding, severe cramping, or a temperature over 100.4 degrees F should be reported to our center.

Follow-up Care

You are welcome to return our center for a follow-up examination about 3 weeks after your procedure or visit your personal physician for follow-up care.
